What to do when there is a fire

Accidents do happen. Statistically, there is always a chance of something happening, as is the case with a fire accident. We have discussed ways of preventing fires from happening and it is crucial that those steps are taken as they help to minimise the chance of one starting in your own home. However, there will be times when a fire happens and there is not much you can do about it. The fire could be from a neighbor, from someone accidentally throwing a cigarette butt in your bin or faulty wiring that wasn’t detected from your regular maintenance. Therefore, it is just as important to understand what to do when a fire happens and we give some critical pointers on what the few steps you can take when one happens.

(1) When a fire happens, it is important to stay calm and not panic. Only when you are calm can you make decisions and evaluate what to do next.

(2) If the fire is small and has not spread, you can try putting it out. Remember, DO NOT try to put flames out with water that is on the kitchen stove where there fire started and burning with oil or an electrical fire. The best way is to use a fire extinguisher (and you should be have if you have taken note of our pointers on being prepared) but if you do not have one, you can try smothering a kitchen fire with a pot cover or flour if it is on a stove top after turning the stove off. As for electrical fires, cut of the electricity supply if you can and try to smother with a heavy blanket.

(3) If you consider the fire to be too big to put out by yourself or it is spreading to a wider area, then there is only one thing you should do now and it is to escape as quickly as possible to a safe area and call the fire brigade and emergency services to help handle the situation. When escaping, do not try and go collect belongings or valuables as when a fire spreads, it spreads quick and will block your exit and shut down your chance of escaping. Therefore, it is important to put your important documents and valuable belongings in a fireproof safe box so that they are protected every moment and give you the chance to escape without having to worry about your valuables.
