What makes a fire safe?

Fire safety awareness has always been promoted unilaterally across all countries and people are becoming more aware that their belongings and important documents need to be protected from fire. This makes having a fireproof safe an important storage tool to protect against damages from heat, so that losses are minimized when an accident do occur. Here we will describe essentially how a fire safe is constructed and what is the key element in keeping the contents protected.

There is no mystery into how a fire safe and the first fire safe concept came out at around early 1800’s and the essential on what makes a fire safe has not evolved much since then although the elements that improves the protection has advanced. Essentially, a fireproof safe is constructed with an outer casing and an inner casing. In between these two layers captures a layer of insulating material which acts as the essential part that prevents heat from passing through. The insulation can be of many forms and various materials. The level of fireproofing will depend on the type of material and the thickness of that insulation. At Guarda, our fireproof safes are protected by our own patented insulation formula which is based on a composite of multiple materials to create the barrier.

Steel casing construction

The casing can be made from varying materials, typically made from steel as traditionally safes are made from steel for contents safety protection. However, other materials can be used to construction as it is the insulation material in between that gives the fire protection and not the casing itself. Resin has now become a choice when constructing fire safes, especially in fireproof chests and fire and waterproof safes. Resin allows forming and has a lightness to it which is an added bonus for the portable fire safes. Also, it allows the addition of seals which helps to add water protection to the safes and chests. Guarda carries both polymer casing fireproof and waterproof chests as well as steel-resin composite fireproof safes with water protection.

Finally, the fireproof safe box is kept closed or locked by a lock of some kind and the options for access control are broad, ranging from simple keys, to combination locks, to digital keypads to biometrics and even facial recognition in some cases can be chosen.  Keep in mind when purchasing a fireproof safe that you are looking for fire protection for your contents and not the fancy locks or cosmetic designs, so do not forget in examining whether the protection functionality meets what you need.

It is important to purchase fireproof safes from a reputable company that specializes in making fireproof safes. It is ideal to purchase fireproof safes that have been certified by a third party to a known industry standard such as the UL-72. Do not be fooled by fancy demonstration which shows fire retardant rather than fire resistance (The difference is explained in our article Difference between fire resistant, fire endurance and fire retardant). At Guarda Safe, we are a professional supplier of independent tested and certified, quality Fireproof and Waterproof Safe Box and Chest. In our line up, you can find one that can help protect what matters most and if you got a question, feel free to contact us.
