When a fire comes, a fireproof safe can give a level of protection for the contents against damage due to heat. How long in which that level of protection lasts will depend on what is called a fire rating. Each certified or independently tested fireproof safe is given what is called a fire rating which is the length of time for which its fire resistance is certified. Tests standards typically a categorized into 30 minutes, 1hour, 2hours, 3 hours and 4 hours and the safes are exposed to temperatures ranging from 843 °C / 1550 °F to 1093 °C / 2000 °F depending on the testing house.Below is the external temperature test curve used by Underwriter’s Laboratory (UL). It defines the exposed temperature of the safe for the various time categories.Knowing the fire rating of your safe is important to ensure that you are getting the level of protection you believe is most suitable. Typically, higher fire-rated safes are much bulkier as they require much more insulation in order to protect for a longer length of time, which translates into higher cost and weight, and may not be ideal for your needs. For a typical house fire, temperatures usually only reach to around 600 °C / 1200 °F at its hottest point and response time for firefighting service are reasonably short, even though it does varies depending on location and time of the day. However, for larger wild fires, they can be much more wide spread and exposure to heat may be more extended as there is much more fuel for the fire to burn and firefighting service may not be in reach to the area. Therefore, knowing all this, it should give an idea on what fire-rated fireproof safe is ideal for your needs to protect what matters most. When selecting a fireproof safe box, there are many aspects to consider, including the contents that you want to protect, the fire rating of the safe, size or capacity of the safe, lock that it uses and the style of the safe. In this article, we would like to discuss about the choice of styles available and their pros and cons so that a better purchasing decision can be made. There are 3 main types of styles for fireproof safes, front opening style, top opening style and drawer opening style.Front opening style:This style opens up like a door and is in line with traditional security safes. With this kind of opening, they can be placed in a variety of locations including next to a desk, inside a closet or even as a bed side table. Typically, this type of style provide ample of space for storage and can go from less than a cubic feet to a few cubic feet and up in storage and the interior can also be organized with manufacturer’s shelving options. This style also allows you to store belongings on top without affecting as long as the front is not obstructed when opening. Top opening style:This style opens at the top like a lid and is the typical choice for small fireproof chests, documents chests or file boxes. They are a popular choice for their versatility, convenience as well as being economical when looking for fireproof protection. The interior space provides adequate space for those important documents, passports and identifications. The item can also be conveniently moved around and take up minimal space in storage. For some, these chests can also be placed inside a larger security safe, providing a fireproof storage capacity inside their existing security safes. As a note, for top opening style fireproof chests, these should be placed flat in storage to ensure the fireproof protection is maintained. Drawer style:As the name suggest, this style opens by pulling out like a drawer. Typically, fireproof filing cabinets use this style and there is a choice of 2, 3 or 4 drawers. There are also fireproof drawers that can be used in homes and is perfect to be placed in closets as a drawer compartment. A lot of people would know what a safe is and would usually have or use one with the mindset to keep valuable secured and deterrent to theft. With protection from fire for your valuables, a fireproof safe is highly recommended and necessary to protect what matters most.A fireproof safe or fireproof box is a storage container that is designed to protect its contents in the event of a fire. The type of fireproof safe varies from fireproof boxes and chests to cabinet styles to filing cabinets all the way up to large storage facilities such as a strong room or vault. When considering the type of fireproof safe box that you need, there are a number of issue to consider, including the type of things you would like to protect, the fire rating or the time it is certified to protect, space required and lock type.Type of things that you want to protect is separated into groups and are affected at different temperature limitsPaper (177oC/350oF): items include passports, certificates, polices, deeds, legal documents and cash Digital (120oC/248oF): items include USB/memory sticks, DVDs, CDs, digital cameras, iPods and external hard drivesFilm (66oC/150oF): items include film, negatives and transparenciesData/magnetic media (52oC/248oF): items include back-up types, diskettes and floppy disks, traditional internal hard drives, video and audio tapes. For Film and data media, humidity is also considered a hazard and under testing criteria, fire protection also requires humidity to be restricted to 85% and 80% respectively.A fireproof safe can come under attack externally from smoke, flames, dust and hot gases and a blaze can typically rise to around 450oC/842oF but even higher depending on the nature of the fire and materials that are fueling the fire. Quality fire safes are tested to higher standards to ensure that there is adequate protection to a typical fire. Therefore, safes that are properly tested are given a fire rating: i.e. the length of time for which its fire resistance is certified. Test standards range from 30 minutes to 240 minutes, and safes are exposed to temperatures ranging from 843oC/1550oF to 1093oC/2000oF.For fireproof safes, internal dimensions will be much smaller than its external dimensions due to the layer of insulation material surrounding the interior to keep the temperature below critical levels. Therefore, one should check that the fireproof selected has adequate interior capacity for your needs.Other issue would be the type of lock that is used to secure the interior of the safe. Depending on the level of security or convenience that one chooses, there is a selection of locks that can be chosen from ranging from key lock, combination dial locks, digital locks and biometric locks. Regardless of concerns or requirements, there is one sure thing, everyone has valuables that can’t be replaced, and a quality certified fireproof safe is a necessity to protect what matters most.Source: Fire Safety Advice Centre “Fireproof Safes”, http://www.firesafe.org.uk/fireproof-safes/
